Eye&Vision – How to preserve visual function
- The most important thing is to see an ophthalmologist to have our visual apparatus checked on a regular basis. This is very important after 45-50 years of age when things might start worsening even if symptoms are not present yet.
- But there are other things we can do: for sure, one of the most important and easy of them is to feed our eye with the right amount of the specific nutrients they require. Traditional wisdom tells us that carrots are good for vision. This is partly true, since carrots are rich in antioxidants, useful to inactivate free radicals, largely responsible for the decay of the performance of our eyes as we age.
- As we mentioned before, another key component whose lack is deleterious for visual capability are omega-3 fatty acids. As a matter of fact, the above ingredients are essential to both stop the depletion of antioxidant capabilities, and replenish the pool of omega-3 fatty acids. Unfortunately, according to many scientists the current western diet is often unbalanced and for most of us it is not sufficient to supply the required amount of antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids. It is hence crucial to get our diet as balanced as possible, with a proper choice of foods and, if needed, with a supplementation of key components. According to the type of your age-related visual problem, your eye specialist might find it useful to perform more tests or to carry out specific initiatives, but in any case a correct supplementation of antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids should be implemented.
